Malthouse Cottages

Jefferies Lane

This terrace known as Malthouse Cottages, at the end of Jeffries Lane, was originally built as a malthouse in the 1700s.

It was converted to cottages in 1880. Today, there are nine cottages as can be seen from the first floor window line.

If you look carefully at the cottage roof tops, (number one is nearest the camera), you can see what looks like a join where number 7 meets number 8 - the chimneys are also out of sync with the rest of the building. The original malthouse would only have extended as far as cottage 7, as numbers 8 and 9 were added around 1900.

The picture on the left dates from the 1920s - 30s.
